HEX Guitars is a South Korea-based brand that specializes in products ranging from entry-level to mid-range price points.
The company operates its own factory in Indonesia, where the CEO himself resides to ensure a high level of quality control.
Because the CEO is so passionate about the craft—to the point of personally overseeing operations on-site rather than outsourcing to other manufacturers—the brand produces guitars of a quality far beyond what one would expect given their price point.
This is the brand’s newly launched headless-style series.
The N400 is the simplest model, featuring a hardtail bridge.
The refined body shape is crafted from mahogany.
Two rubber feet are attached to the body end, allowing the guitar to stand stably even without a guitar stand.
The neck is made of roasted maple.
Roasted wood, also known as thermo wood, is a new material popularized by Japan’s Sago New Material Guitars.
Originally a Finnish technology, it was developed as wood for building saunas.
It is characterized by the evaporation of moisture and oils from within the wood through high-temperature treatment, resulting in high stability even in hot and humid conditions.
In terms of sound, it gives the impression of a more mellow and rich tone.
The fingerboard is made of Indian rosewood and features a 12–16-inch compound radius.
A compound radius features a rounded fingerboard shape in the lower positions and a flatter shape in the higher positions.
Generally, while a rounded fingerboard radius offers good playability, it is prone to muffled tones in the higher positions.
The compound radius was developed to solve this issue.
This technology is adopted by high-end brands such as Suhr Guitars and Tom Anderson.
The frets are made of stainless steel.
Stainless steel is characterized by its lack of tarnish and high hardness.
Stainless steel frets retain their luster indefinitely and are extremely resistant to wear, making them popular among high-end guitar brands in recent years.
The neck shape is slim and features a neutral C-shape.
The pickups are humbucking models featuring original ceramic magnets.
This aspect was updated in 2025, with the adoption of new, more refined pickups.
They use their original pickups in many of their models.
This is not for cost-cutting purposes, but because they have confidence in the quality of the pickups they design themselves.
Designed by staff who understand music and play it regularly, these pickups are the result of thorough research into numerous elements, including magnets, wire, and bobbins.
The controls consist of a pickup selector, volume, and tone (with a push-pull switch to turn coil tap on and off).
The balance in the hands is excellent, and even players accustomed to Fender or Gibson guitars are unlikely to find the HEX N difficult to play.
No special headless-specific strings are required; standard guitar strings (such as those for Stratocasters or Les Pauls) can be used.
It delivers a clean, crisp sound typical of a headless guitar, yet it doesn’t sacrifice musical harmonics or rich bass response.
Thanks to the exceptionally high quality of the basic neck construction, playability is excellent; it would be difficult to say it falls short even when compared to instruments priced around 200,000 yen.
Overall, this is a wonderful product with high quality in every aspect—appearance, playability, and sound.
It’s certainly a great choice for anyone who wants to try a headless guitar, and I don’t think it’s a bad choice at all as a first guitar either.
