Xotic is a brand founded in Los Angeles by Japanese luthier Hiro Miura.
It is favored by many renowned musicians, including Allen Hinds, Toshi Yanagi, Oz Noy, and Yuya Komoguchi.
This model is the XCE-1 from the Classic Evolution series, crafted in 2008.
It is a limited-edition model of which only 12 were made, and this particular instrument is the third of those 12.
The guitar was crafted with the involvement of Michael Tuttle, a luthier who has worked at Valley Arts and Don Grosh Guitars and is now highly acclaimed for his own brand.
This is an extremely rare instrument, created in collaboration between Xotic and Michael Tuttle, who currently crafts guitars priced in the 1 million yen range.
It features a 60s-style design with an alder body, a maple neck, and a Madagascar rosewood fingerboard—a wood that is difficult to source today.
The body features a sunburst finish using nitrocellulose lacquer, applied in an extremely thin coat.
With a 9.5-inch radius fingerboard, a C-shaped neck, and Jim Dunlop 6105 frets, it combines a vintage-like feel with modern playability.
It is equipped with Bud’z Pickups.
These pickups are hand-wound using Alnico 5 magnets.
The sound is bright yet warm.
The mid-low range is particularly full-bodied, producing a rich, fat tone.
It faithfully captures picking nuances, and the sound reveals different expressions depending on the player, showcasing the depth of this model.
The hardware is equally impressive, featuring Gotoh tuning machines, a Raw Vintage saddle, and a 6-point tremolo unit.
This model serves as a sort of prototype that paved the way for the later Xotic California Classic series, and it is an extremely rare find on the market.
Why not take advantage of this opportunity?
Approximately 70% of the frets remain.
The truss rod and neck are in good condition.
The body and finish show general signs of impact marks, scratches, and tarnish on the metal parts.
There is a crack in the finish on the neck plate.
One of the set screws on the 5th string saddle is a bit tight.
Regarding the electronics, there is a slight crackle in the bridge pickup tone.
No obvious modifications were found.
