Musicman is a high-end American brand trusted by many top professionals, producing signature models for the likes of John Petrucci and Steve Lukather.
Sterling is Musicman's entry-level brand.
This model is positioned as a budget version of the JP16, John Petrucci's signature model.
But it's packed with authentic features, including a roasted maple neck, Floyd-type locking bridge, and an active circuit with a 12dB boost (operated by pushing or pulling the VOL pot).
It also boasts high-spec pickups replaced with Dimarzio DP282 and 281.
JP160s are not widely available in Japan, so we ordered this one from overseas, replaced the pickups at our shop, and then purchased it without playing it much.
The body is made of African mahogany, the fingerboard is rosewood, and the neck is roasted maple.
Roasted maple is a wood that has been artificially treated at high temperatures to achieve high strength.
Furthermore, many pieces of wood that may develop warping in the future will do so during this treatment, and are generally not used in finished products.
This tends to result in a slightly harsher sound.
Overall, this is a high-quality modern guitar with the attack characteristic of bolt-on guitars, but also a warm texture.
There is almost no fret wear, and the truss rod and neck are in good condition.
The body is in basically undamaged condition, with a paint chip on the right cutaway.
There is a crack where the bridge arm attaches, and while it is possible to install the arm, it cannot be installed in the traditional manner. This does not appear to have much of an impact on playability.
There is a slight dent and scratch on the fingerboard between the first and second frets.
The switch has changed in appearance over time.
The weight is 3.59 kg.
This guitar will be adjusted by a GIB craftsman for optimal playability before delivery.
