Kz Guitar Works is a brand based in Zushi City, Kanagawa Prefecture, that manufactures high-quality guitars.

The company is also known worldwide for producing the Brian May model guitar for Queen.

While the Red Special is highly acclaimed, the brand’s original models are also praised for their excellent playability and high-quality sound, and are currently favored by renowned guitarists, including Kazumi Watanabe.

This model is the flagship Kz Versa.

It is an ambitious creation packed with various innovative ideas, based on a traditional double-cutaway design.

This particular model was exhibited at an event held in 2026.

The body back is made of Big-Leaf Mahogany, and the top is Hard Rock Maple.

The familiar, traditional double-cutaway design is finished in a natural color that highlights the wood’s natural hue and grain, resulting in a simple, understated look.

The fingerboard inlays are unique, giving the instrument a simple yet luxurious feel.

The body features a chambered construction, achieving both lightweight playability and a rich, resonant tone.

The neck is crafted from Big-Leaf Mahogany.

The neck has a satin finish, offering a smooth texture and excellent glide when shifting positions.

The neck shape is Slim Thin, and the fret size is Medium Jumbo.

The fingerboard is made of Indian Rosewood and features a 10“–14” compound radius, providing modern playability.

A compound radius features a rounded profile in the lower positions and a flatter profile in the higher positions.

Generally, while a rounded fingerboard radius offers good playability, it is prone to muffled tones in the higher positions.

The compound radius solves this issue.

The frets are precision-finished, ensuring clear tone all the way up to the higher frets.
You can really feel the meticulous craftsmanship unique to Japanese-made instruments.

The neck joint employs the “RS-Joint,” developed from the Red Special’s neck joint structure.

This significantly reduces the likelihood of center misalignment.

Of course, the larger joint area and the increased proportion of neck wood in the overall body also have an acoustic impact.

The pickups include Kz Versa Singles for the neck and middle positions, and a Kz Versa Humbucker for the bridge.

The sound is characterized not only by the balanced tone typical of high-end Japanese instruments but also by the unique character of the original pickups.

Three toggle switches allow you to individually turn each pickup on or off.

This enables a wide variety of sound options, such as having all pickups active or using a Telecaster-style Neck + Bridge combination.

Additionally, it features the onboard “Kz MBB (Mid Booster / Buffer).”

This allows for a boost of approximately +12dB centered around 500Hz, or a boost of +3dB centered around 4kHz in addition to the 500Hz boost.

The boost level is freely adjustable, making it invaluable when you need that extra punch.

The fusion of these elements delivers a wide range of sound variations, as if you were switching between multiple guitars.

It offers the versatility to handle any situation with just this one instrument.

The hardware is equally impressive, featuring a Black Tasq nut, Gotoh locking tuners, and a Wilkinson VG300 bridge.

Its appeal lies in its sophisticated design, meticulous craftsmanship, high-quality sound, and an incredible range of tonal variations—hard to believe it’s just one guitar.

We confidently recommend this model to anyone seeking a high-end, Japanese-made guitar for live performance.
