ESP is one of Japan’s leading guitar brands, enjoying worldwide renown alongside Fender and Gibson.
George Lynch, Alexi Laiho, Toshihiko Takamizawa, and Takayoshi Omura are among the musicians known for their love of ESP guitars.
This instrument is an early 1995 MX-250, which can be considered the origin of Metallica’s James Hetfield signature model.
Crafted as a tribute to James Hetfield’s favorite guitar from the *Black Album* era, this instrument has become a highly sought-after collector’s item worldwide, especially since production of its successor models has now ceased.
The body is made of mahogany, the neck of maple, and the fingerboard of ebony.
Its aggressive design—often considered synonymous with unconventional guitars—combined with the black body and hardware, along with the ESP “banana” headstock characteristic of that era, creates an incredibly cool and appealing look.
It features a deep neck joint, 22 frets, and a 24.75-inch scale length—specs reminiscent of a Gibson.
The substantial neck shape and jumbo frets deliver versatile playability, handling everything from powerful riffs to technical phrases.
It lacks the ESP logo on the back of the headstock and features details unique to early models, such as the bell-shaped truss rod cover.
Both the neck and bridge pickups are EMG 81s.
With tight bass response, a sharp attack, and a clear, dense sound that retains its definition even at high gain, it truly evokes the sound of James Hetfield during the *Black Album* era.
With very few units currently available on the market, this is a rare model that enjoys high popularity both domestically and internationally.
Whether for playing or as a collector’s item, this guitar holds great value—please take this opportunity to consider it.
Approximately 80% of the frets remain.
The truss rod and neck are in good condition.
The body and finish show signs of wear appropriate for its age, such as fine scratches and dents; due to the black color, these are more noticeable when held up to the light.
There are several large scratches and dents on the back of the body.
The black hardware shows some tarnish, and the escutcheon shows signs of wear.
Almost all frets are slightly raised, but the current string action ranges from 2.0 mm on the 6th string to 1.5 mm on the 1st string. There is no string choking or abnormal damping, so there are no issues with playability.
There is a small crack in the fingerboard near the 11th fret.
There are traces of a sticker that had been affixed for many years between the tip of the headstock and the pickups.
The electronics are in good condition.
No obvious modifications were found.
